Bayeté Ross Smith - Activism in Art Lecture

request the pleasure of your company at an evening lecture presented by U.S. visiting artist, Bayeté Ross Smith. The lecture will be focused on Activism in Art, exploring the role of art in driving critical conversations on diversity and social inclusion issues. Ross Smith will also showcase a digital installation inspired by some of his campaigns which were designed to challenge bias, promote equity and foster community.


Bayeté Ross Smith is an interdisciplinary artist, photographer, filmmaker, and educator. His widely acclaimed study, “Our Kind of People,” analyzes stereotypes and examines how perceptions based on race, background, and gender affect our daily interactions.  Ross Smith is a faculty member at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. He is also Columbia Law School’s inaugural artist-in-residence. He is currently visiting South Africa as a U.S. traveling speaker through the U.S. State Department's international speaker programme, which is a collaboration between U.S. Embassies around the world and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. During his stay, he will visit institutions and engage with various stakeholders in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria, focusing his engagements on racial equity and equality.
