Arts Management in the spotlight at the University of Pretoria this September

Published August 31, 2022

In response to the growing recognition of the value of the highly specialised training that people with degrees in arts administration receive, the University of Pretoria, School of the Arts: Drama and Javett-UP will host the Art Management Symposium on 9 September 2022 at the Javett Art Centre.

The Arts Management Symposium is aimed at arts practitioners and/or artists in practice who ordinarily do not have access to information and resources in areas such as intellectual property/ copyright issues, monetizing their art forms and a general understanding and application of business in the arts practices.

Premised on the fact that Arts Management is a viable career path in many parts of the world, the Symposium will focus on the importance of the inclusion and integration of arts administration in the general school system, leading up to higher education studies. Emphasis will be placed on arts advocacy and entrepreneurship skills in the arts. Topics for the symposium include marketing, intellectual property, monitoring and evaluation, entrepreneurship fundraising and the broader creative economy.

“The world over arts and cultural organizations, funders, foundations, and government agencies are recognising the need for specialists in arts administration and the importance of arts management training cannot be over-emphasised. Students leaving educational spaces/ institutions and entering the creative and cultural industries should have an understanding of all aspects of arts management,” said organiser David April, UP School of the Arts: Drama.

This programme meets the mandate of both the Javett-UP and the UP School of the Arts: Drama in fostering academic citizenship and providing access to information and opportunities where a diverse range of artists in the creative and cultural industries can engage and interact. It brings together industry leaders; David April (UP), Madeleine Lambert (BASA), Levinia Jones (Independent Consultant), Dr Ismail Mahomed (UKZN), Lakin Morgan-Baatjies Javett-UP,  Rahiem Whisgary (DALRO) and Jessica Denyschen (ACT.)

The keynote address, The Importance of Arts Management to a sustainable cultural & creative economy, will be given by Avril Joffe, Wits School of Arts: Cultural Policy & Management (CPM). The Symposium will close with a tour of the Javett-UP and networking opportunities for all attendees of the event.

Limited seating is still available for the Arts Management Symposium which is open to both practices arts individuals as well as arts institutions.
