October Note

Javett-UP first opened its doors in 2019 with such enthusiasm and optimism, and as it marks three years of operation continues to carry those founding energies that embody its character. Together with its connection to the diverse communities of practice and contact zones, Javett-up has emerged from the Covid-19 lockdown more inspired and committed to contributing to the growth of the arts and cultural heritage sector.

Over the past 2 years, the Javett Art Centre has undergone a shift in leadership and with that has come an enhanced strategic vision that was, in part, inspired by the effects and impact of the Covid 19 pandemic across the globe.

The devastating impact of the Covid 19 pandemic exposed us to the extreme inequalities of our country and the region. The significance of democratic access to arts and cultural heritage resources or experiences or values is now central to our curatorial inquiries. We are compelled to review how we programme for the public and with the public, through a network of institutions related to us. With the valued support we receive from the partnerships with all our donors, funders and sponsors, we are able to navigate this journey of humbling challenges and encouraging successes.

We are honoured that our home for the arts, culture and heritage is now part of recognising, hosting and celebrating the highest achievements by our practitioners, and highlighting those who have not as yet made it to this stage, but are ensuring that the sector thrives with creativity and innovation.

As the creative cultural industry re-emerges from the devastating effects of Covid-19, we hope that our audiences are drawn to Javett-UP as a source of pleasure, and a sanctuary that unleashes their intuitive and creative spirits to push the boundaries of thinking and doing to improve the human condition.

Together with our founders, the Javett Foundation and the University of Pretoria, we are extending an invitation to you all to become our partners. It is a partnership that validates the significant role of the arts in our life. Art inspires who we continue to re-imagine ourselves to become. It enhances our abilities to think, read and engage with our surroundings in the most critical manner.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Heart of Art in our City of Tshwane.
