One Is But A Shadow Of The Other

February 23, 2023 - February 26, 2024

23 Lynnwood Road, Elandspoort 357-Jr, Pretoria, South Africa

This curatorial project takes as its starting point Deborah Bell’s 1991 etching titled One is But the Shadow of the Other. Drawing from the South32 collection the project  is interested in unfolding the continuous relationships of people with space and the tensions that can be created when unlike\like things are placed adjacent to each other.  Works selected for this exhibition evoke forces that cannot be seen or touched  but a conjured affect.

One is But the Shadow of the Other is a result of a collaboration of a small group of young graduate interns who have been tasked with researching the historic South32 collection by tracing the work’s political dynamics in relation to current day-to-day experiences of a younger generation.

The South32 Collection is on loan to the University of Pretoria under the custodianship of the Javett-UP  for a period of ten years starting in 2019. The collection was started in 1994 to mark the political changes in South Africa, however this collection comprises works dating as far back as 1946 as well as works from beyond South Africa.

The internship is part of the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP) coordinated by the Art Bank of South Africa.

Curated by Tayla Hollamby, Thulani Mlangeni  and Tshimollo Mnisi.
